Rainy Days: Makuru in Bold Park
The colder weather and rainier days signal the start of the Noongar season of Makuru. With the wet weather comes flushes of green growth as the bushland responds to the more regular rainfall.
Some plants absorb so much water that their branches burst with sweet gum that hardens on the trunk and sparkles in the winter sun. Many different fungi are starting to pop up from the soil or on fallen logs, while small animals take the opportunity to warm up in the sunlight any time the clouds clear. The Cockie’s Tongue bushes will soon be blooming with bright red flowers while the Basket Bush has a more subtle display of tiny white flowers.
Join the Friends of Bold Park Bushland volunteer guides this month to see the effects of the seasonal rains on the bushland’s plants, animals, and fungi. Wear comfortable walking shoes and come dressed for the weather with a hat and drinking water.
Bookings are not required, but please let us know if you are bringing a group of 10 or more people. Our events go ahead in rain or shine, however walks may be cancelled if a severe weather warning is in place.
