Kambarang: New Life in Bold Park
Kambarang is the Noongar season of new life throughout our local bushland areas, with the many wildflowers providing abundant food for animals and their new offspring. Join the Friends of Bold Park Bushland volunteer guides on a guided walk this month as we search for some of these signs of kambarang.
Insects are becoming more active as the weather warms up, especially those that feed on nectar. Bees, wasps, and butterflies all gather together around flowers, especially the long flower spikes of the balga, or grasstree. Look for male flower wasps carrying around the flightless females as they travel from flower to flower.
All this activity provides increased food for our local birds, many of which breed at this time of year when there is plenty to feed their growing chicks. Plenty of birds can be seen as they search for food to take back to their nest. Honeyeaters feed at flowers, gerygones and pardalotes search the trees for insects, and goshawks and other birds of prey soar above. Look and listen for rainbow bee-eaters that have returned from their northern wintering areas and are starting to dig nesting tunnels in the ground.
This free, all-ages walk starts at 9am from the Tuart carpark on Perry Lakes Drive. Bookings are not required, simply meet our guides there on the day.
Wear shoes that are comfortable for walking and come dressed for the forecast weather, including a hat and drinking water. Please note that there are no toilets in Bold Park, with the nearest facilities at Perry Lakes Reserve.
Our events go ahead in rain or shine, however walks will be cancelled if a severe weather warning is in place at the time of the walk.
