Changes in bird species composition in Bold Park and surrounding areas,1829-2020s
In 1829, 97 land bird species are estimated to have bred in what became the western suburbs of Perth. Now 48 species are extinct there, and another 33 species are on a trajectory to local extinction. Why?
Nearly 20 causes have been identified as plausible factors in explaining these declines. This talk will discuss the relative significance of these causes, and how they have changed in their influence and relevance during the past 190 years. The talk concludes with some innovative ideas that could serve to minimise the vulnerability of the remaining land bird species inhabiting Bold Park and other bushland remnants to further extinctions. Some suggestions are offered for repatriating species that no longer occur in Bold Park.
Ian Abbott is a retired ecologist with nearly 60 years’ experience in the study of avifaunas. He began his research career studying the landbirds of Tasmania and islands in Bass Strait, and continued with Darwin’s finches in the Galapagos, land birds occurring on WA islands, impacts of fire and logging on jarrah forest birds, and for the last 15 years the occurrence of land birds in bushland and parkland in the western suburbs of Perth.
Following the guest presentation, we'll have reports on the activities of the Friends of Bold Park Bushland over the past year, and an update from the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority on their management activities in Bold Park. We will also be electing the 2026/27 FOBPB Management Committee
