Banksias are a uniquely Australian genus. Over 90% of species live only in the southwest WA, with seven of these found in Bold Park.

The Acorn Banksia is the brightest tree at this time of year, turning orange as the hundreds of individual flowers on each flower spike open. The start of the Noongar season of djeran is marked by the appearance of the red and yellow flowers of the Firewood Banksias. Around Camel Lake the large golden flower spikes of the Swamp Banksias are starting to develop.

The staggered flowering times of each banksia species ensures a reliable source of food for nectar-feeding birds and insects. Their seeds are a staple part of the diet of threatened Black Cockatoos, as are the insect grubs that burrow into the wood of the banksias’ branches.

Wear shoes suitable for walking and come dressed for the weather with a hat and drinking water. Bookings are not required, just find our guides at the meeting point, but please let us know if you are bringing a group of 10 or more people. Please note that there are no toilets in Bold Park, with the nearest facilities at Perry Lakes Reserve.

Our walks go ahead in most weather conditions, however they may be cancelled if a severe weather warning is in place.
