Volunteering
The Friends of Bold Park Bushland is entirely run by volunteers. If you would like to share a few hours of your time and effort, you will be able to enjoy some good company while learning about our local nature and making a big difference to the quality and vitality of Bold Park.
There are several volunteer groups within the Friends where your time and knowledge could help us. Due to BGPA policy & volunteer insurance requirements, all volunteers working in bushland areas must be at least 18 years of age and be registered as a volunteer before their first session (contact us for the sign-up form). More BGPA volunteering policy information and volunteer resources can be found on the BGPA website.
Please Contact Us if you are interested in assisting us in any of these volunteer roles:
Bushcare Volunteers
Bushcare volunteers assist with our bushland restoration projects. This includes tree planting, seed collection, weeding, and occasional other bushland tasks. Bushcare volunteers work together in the same area. We currently have two main conservation precincts: the bushland within the Tuart Loop walk ("Eastern Gateway" site) and the northern end of the Camel Lake Trail loop ("The Loop" site).
When: Fortnightly on Sunday (Eastern Gateway) or Wednesday (The Loop) mornings from June to November.
Requirements: A moderate level of physical fitness and enthusiasm! Training on weed identification, correct planting technique, etc will be provided.
Volunteer Guides
Volunteer guides lead walks along the bushland trails for the public, sharing their knowledge of the plants, animals, fungi, and history of the park. Our guides team currently runs 3 walks a month, usually a Saturday, Sunday, and weekday morning (9-10.30am) from April-November and sunset walks in the evenings from January-March, with occasional additional walks organised throughout the year.
When: Each guide leads approximately one walk a month as availability suits.
Requirements: Moderate physical fitness, knowledge of Bold Park and the local environment, confidence with public speaking, and enthusiasm for sharing your knowledge with the public.
We are running a training course for new guides in September 2024. Email guides@friendsofboldpark.com.au for more information and to register your interest.
Management Committee
The Management Committee oversees the operations of the Friends and makes decisions about what activities we undertake. The Committee meets once a month on a weekday evening, with additional admin and project work throughout the month as required.
Administration Assistance
If you don't have time to commit to a regular volunteering role or feel unable to assist with the more physically active roles, then you could still help with some of our smaller or more ad-hoc volunteering roles, including:
-
Finding and applying for grants to fund future bushland restoration projects
-
Scanning and digitising documents (e.g. old FOBPB newsletters)
-
Writing a feature article for our newsletter on a topic of your choice relevant to Bold Park and/or the local environment
-
Editing the newsletter (mostly wrangling contributors for information as we already have a newsletter designer)
